It’s been called the greatest Super Bowl ad ever and as its 30th anniversary approaches, people are speculating if this infrequent NFL advertiser will use this year to attempt another big one. The company was Apple, the product was the Macintosh computer and the occasion back in 1984 was its product launch. The :60 spot is still viewed thousands of times every day and it is iconic in advertising and everyday circles for its entertainment value, creativity, visuals and most importantly its ability to generate interest in the product. From a purely advertising angle, this is the missing link with contemporary Super Bowl ads.
An advertisement should draw the viewer to want to buy the product, use the service, support the company and/or develop/continue a positive impression. At the very least, the viewer should remember the company, product or service and the ad should be in sync with the image. How many times have you watched the Super Bowl commercials only to be left with a distance memory of the company? It may have been funny or memorable – but did you remember the product you were supposed to buy?
Maybe that’s why the Apple spot is still touted as an example of everything right in an ad. Here’s a flashback to 1984. Enjoy the Super Bowl XLVIII commercials!
