It wasn’t too long ago (6 months, if you must know) we reported on how Facebook was still the clear favorite social media site for teens. Well not so much anymore. Piper Jaffray released the results of their Taking Stock with Teens semi-annual survey and teens’ Facebook usage has dropped by 27% since the last survey 6 months ago. Here is where you will find teens today, compared to just 6 months ago.
Percentage of Teens Who Say They Use:
INSTAGRAM
Fall 2014 Survey – 76% (up 7% from Spring)
TWITTER
Fall 2014 Survey – 59% (down 4% from Spring)
FACEBOOK
Fall 2014 Survey – 45% (down 27% from Spring)
Other social networking sites did not receive more than 25%, including Pinterest, Tumblr, Google+, Reddit and Other. Eight percent said they do not use social media. Get the full infographic here.
Friends and the Internet dominate teen influences and combine in social media environments. Instagram and Twitter are the two most used social media sites, implying teens are increasingly visual and sound bite communicators.
So, if you’re looking to reach young people, head over to Instagram right now. Next month it might be something new. (And don’t feel too bad for Mark Zuckerberg for the disappearing teens. Facebook bought Instagram a year or so ago.)
Any predictions for the next survey in the spring? Here’s one from LGK: SnapChat will make an appearance in the top 5.
